Introduction: My Path to My First Leadership Position

The transition from being a regular team member to a leadership role is a major step. At the age of 24, I took on my first leadership position – managing a team of seven employees, all of whom were older and more experienced than me. Some of them even had children my age. Suddenly, I was expected to make decisions, give instructions, and ensure a harmonious work environment.

My biggest mistake? I wanted to know and do everything myself. I thought a good leader needed to have an immediate answer to every question. But this quickly led to stress and overwhelm. Over time, I realized: My job is not to have all the answers but to ask the right questions and support my team, enabling them to do the best possible job. I had to learn to delegate responsibilities and rely on my team's strengths. This insight completely changed my perspective on leadership.

This phase of learning and self-reflection made it clear to me how important it is not just to focus on professional expertise but also on interpersonal skills – in my opinion, the latter make up at least two-thirds of leadership success. Leadership is not just about giving instructions but also about listening, understanding, and creating an environment where all team members can thrive. It is a continuous development process that requires patience, courage, and adaptability.


The Biggest Challenge: From Colleague to Leader

One of the most difficult hurdles when stepping into a leadership role is the shift in roles. There are three main challenges that young leaders often face:


👉 Transitioning from an Expert to a Leader – Instead of completing every task yourself, a leader's primary role is to guide and support the team. Learning to delegate responsibilities and focusing on the bigger picture is essential. This shift can be particularly challenging when you were previously in the same position as your team members and suddenly find yourself in a leadership role.


👉 Earning Respect and Trust – This is especially challenging when you are promoted from within your own team. Former colleagues need time to adjust to your new role as their leader. Building a foundation of trust requires respectful interaction, clear communication, and openness. Establishing a trusting relationship takes time and continuous effort to show appreciation and understanding.


👉 Finding the Right Balance Between Closeness and Authority – A good leader should be approachable and open while maintaining clear boundaries. Being too friendly can result in a lack of authority, whereas maintaining too much distance can weaken trust. Striking a balance between empathy and decisiveness is crucial for maintaining a healthy team dynamic and leading effectively.


Three Proven Strategies for Young Leaders


1. Learn to Delegate Tasks

Many new leaders hesitate to delegate responsibilities. They believe it is faster if they complete tasks themselves. However, this is a misconception.


✅ Set clear expectations and define goals.

✅ Assign responsibility to your team and focus on leadership.

✅ Accept that mistakes will happen – they are part of the learning process.

✅ Provide regular feedback to help your team grow.

✅ Foster a culture of trust where your team feels encouraged to develop their own solutions.


2. Develop Strong Communication Skills

As a leader, your job is to motivate your team, give clear instructions, and identify problems early on.


✅ Practice active listening – your team members want to feel heard and understood.

✅ Learn to give constructive criticism without demotivating your team.

✅ Establish regular meetings to exchange feedback and ideas.

✅ Develop your emotional intelligence to better understand and respond to different personalities in your team.


3. Commit to Continuous Personal Growth

A good leader never stops learning. Leadership is a journey, and there are always new things to discover.


✅ Seek a coach, mentor, or role model you can learn from.

✅ Take time regularly to reflect on your strengths and areas for improvement.

✅ Use books, podcasts, or seminars to enhance your skills.

✅ Develop strategies to manage stress and maintain long-term well-being – you matter!

✅ Participate in training programs designed specifically for leaders.

✅ Network with other leaders, preferably from different industries or companies, to gain new perspectives and learn from their experiences.


I recall an experience with an employee who often started her Mondays in a bad mood. At first, I wasn’t sure how to handle it. Later, I discovered that talking about her hobby – gardening – made her more motivated. Simply taking a moment to listen to her and engage in a short conversation improved not only her mood but also her performance. This experience showed me how important it is to address team members as individuals.

Another defining experience was learning to manage conflicts within my team. Initially, I tried to avoid problems or resolve them indirectly. Over time, I realized that open and honest conversations were the best way to clear up misunderstandings and strengthen team cohesion. This was a crucial lesson that helped me become a more authentic and confident leader.


Conclusion: Leadership is a Development Process

Stepping into a leadership role can be challenging but also presents a great opportunity for growth. No one is born a perfect leader – it takes time, practice, and self-reflection to feel comfortable in this role. Those who are willing to work on themselves and learn from others will continue to improve and become successful leaders.

Additionally, continuous learning, trying new methods, and adapting to change are essential. Leadership is a dynamic process, and those who are open to growth and improvement will achieve long-term success.
